How to Use This Page

This page covers the most common problems encountered when using the Vocal Range Finder — including failed microphone detection, notes that are not confirming, unexpectedly narrow range results, classification results that seem wrong, and mobile-specific issues. Work through the section that matches your situation. If your problem is not covered here, use the Contact page to submit a technical question.

The Tool Will Not Start

Problem: The browser asks for microphone permission but the tool does not respond after I click Allow.

  1. Another application is holding the microphone. Close all communication apps — Zoom, Teams, Discord, Google Meet — reload the page, and try again.
  2. Browser permission was previously blocked. To reset:
    • Chrome: Lock icon in address bar → Site settings → Microphone → Allow
    • Firefox: Lock icon → Connection secure → More information → Permissions → Use the Microphone → Allow
    • Safari: Safari → Settings → Websites → Microphone → find vocalrangefinder.com → Allow
  3. System-level microphone access is disabled.
    • Windows: Settings → Privacy and Security → Microphone → ensure your browser is listed and allowed
    • macOS: System Settings → Privacy and Security → Microphone → ensure your browser is ticked

Problem: The tool loads but shows no pitch reading when I sing.

  • Microphone input volume is too low. Increase your system microphone input level to at least 60–70%. On Windows: right-click the speaker icon → Sounds → Recording → select your microphone → Properties → Levels. On macOS: System Settings → Sound → Input → Input volume.
  • The wrong input device is selected. Set your intended microphone as the system default input device before loading the page.
  • Singing too quietly. The detection pipeline requires a clear voiced sound above the noise floor. Sing at a confident, supported volume — not a whisper.
  • On iOS Safari: Tap the start button clearly to unlock the AudioContext, then begin singing immediately.


Notes Are Not Being Confirmed

Problem: The tool detects my pitch in real time but no notes are being added to my range.

The note confirmation requirement — sustaining a note within ±25 cents of the same pitch for a minimum of 300–500 ms — is the most common reason confirmed notes are fewer than expected.

Pitch instability during sustained tones. If your pitch wobbles significantly — due to vibrato, nervousness, breath support issues, or a cold voice — the note may not meet the confirmation threshold. Try sustaining on a firm, supported straight tone. Once some notes start confirming, natural vibrato on subsequent notes is less likely to cause problems.

Moving through the range too quickly. The tool needs a held note, not a scale. Slow down — sing a pitch, hold it for a clear two to three seconds, then move to the next. Glissandos and scales will not confirm individual notes along the way.

Testing before the voice is warmed up. Notes at the extremes of range require a warmed-up voice to sustain cleanly. Begin in the middle of your range where confirmation comes easily, warm up for a few minutes, then test the extremes.

OS noise suppression suppressing the signal. Windows and macOS apply noise suppression to microphone input by default. This can interfere with consistent pitch confirmation. On Windows: right-click the speaker icon → Sounds → Recording → select your microphone → Properties → Enhancements → tick “Disable all enhancements.” Retry after disabling.


Range Seems Too Narrow

Problem: The tool is only confirming a small portion of my range — for example, just one octave when I expect significantly more.

Not testing the full range. The tool only confirms what you actually sing into it. Many users test only their comfortable middle range and miss the extremes. Actively test your lowest sustainable note — including going below your speaking pitch — and your highest note, including head voice or falsetto.

Head voice and falsetto not included. If you are singing only in chest voice, you are measuring only part of your range. The tool detects pitch regardless of register. Actively test your upper register — this is where the difference between a one-and-a-half-octave and a two-and-a-half-octave confirmed range typically lies.

Consumer microphone roll-off at low frequencies. Built-in laptop microphones attenuate signals below approximately 100–150 Hz. Bass and baritone voices testing notes below G2 (98 Hz) may find those lowest notes fail to confirm. An external USB microphone with better low-frequency response will give more reliable confirmation of the lowest bass and baritone notes.


Classification Result Seems Wrong

Problem: The tool classified me as soprano but I sing in the alto section of my choir.

Range boundaries overlap. If your confirmed range extends into soprano territory — particularly if you included full head voice in your session — the range-based classification may suggest soprano. This does not mean the classification is wrong for the range measured; it means the range measurement cannot distinguish between a mezzo-soprano and a soprano when the confirmed range spans both territories.

Your choral placement reflects your teacher’s or director’s assessment of your passaggi, tessitura, and tone quality — all of which this tool cannot measure. If the tool’s range-based classification conflicts with your professional placement, trust the professional assessment.

Problem: The tool says tenor but I have always sung baritone parts.

This is common for high baritones or baritone-tenor transition voices. The ranges overlap significantly in the B3–E4 zone. A confirmed range that extends to C5 or above will suggest tenor, even if the passaggio location and vocal quality are baritone. Passaggio assessment by a teacher is the definitive test.


Microphone-Specific Problems

Problem: The tool works on my phone but gives a much narrower range on my laptop.

Built-in laptop microphones typically have poorer low-frequency response than modern smartphone microphones. If your laptop microphone is rolling off below 150 Hz, bass and baritone notes at the lower end of your range may not confirm. Try an external USB microphone or, if your smartphone gave better results, use the desktop browser with your phone as an external microphone via a USB audio interface.

Problem: Results are less accurate in Chrome than in Firefox.

Chrome applies default echo cancellation and noise suppression to the microphone stream that can affect note confirmation consistency. Firefox typically applies less processing. If Chrome gives inconsistent results, try Firefox. On Chrome, you can also navigate to chrome://flags and search for audio processing settings to disable hardware echo cancellation.


Voice Health Note

Problem: I am trying to test the extremes of my range but it feels uncomfortable or strained.

Do not push your voice to confirm notes that require strain. The Vocal Range Finder is designed to measure the range you can sustain cleanly — not the absolute physiological outer limits of what your voice can produce under pressure. Forced or strained phonation at the extremes of range:

  • Does not represent your usable singing range
  • May not confirm reliably because strained phonation is often aperiodic
  • Carries a small risk of vocal fatigue or strain, particularly if the voice is not fully warmed up

If a note feels uncomfortable, do not include it in your range session. A confirmed range of comfortable, sustainable notes is more useful — and more honest — than a range that includes forced extremes.


Mobile-Specific Problems

Problem: Notes confirm on desktop but not on my phone.

Mobile browsers apply additional audio processing that can affect the note confirmation pipeline. Sustain notes for longer — three to four seconds rather than two — and sing more clearly and loudly than on desktop. For accurate vocal range measurement, desktop use with a wired microphone is recommended.

Problem: The tool does not work on my iPhone.

iOS Safari applies AudioContext restrictions that require a clear tap to unlock before microphone capture begins. Tap the start button and begin singing immediately. iOS also applies automatic voice processing that can affect note confirmation for singing voices. For reliable vocal range measurement, desktop use with a wired microphone is strongly recommended over iOS Safari.
