Educational Purpose

VocalRangeFinder.com and all content published on it — including the Vocal Range Finder tool, the Methodology documentation, educational articles, FAQs, and supporting pages — is provided for educational and informational purposes only.

The information on this site is intended to help singers, voice students, choral singers, and curious adults measure their singing range, understand voice type classification criteria, and learn about the science of singing range and vocal register. It is not intended as professional voice coaching, clinical vocal assessment, speech-language pathology services, laryngological advice, or any other form of certified professional service.

Nance is a vocal range researcher and voice health educator who has built this site to share accurate, scientifically grounded information about vocal range measurement and voice type science. The content on VocalRangeFinder.com reflects Nance’s research and expertise. It does not constitute a professional engagement, and no professional relationship is created between Nance and any user of this site.

Range Measurement Accuracy and Limitations

The Vocal Range Finder measures vocal range by confirming sustained notes using YIN/FFT pitch detection and note confirmation logic within the browser’s Web Audio API environment. The following limitations apply to every result produced by this tool.

Range measurement accuracy is approximately ±1–2 semitones at the extremes. Under typical conditions — a quiet room, a warmed-up voice, and a functional microphone — the note confirmation pipeline achieves accuracy of approximately ±1–2 semitones at the lowest and highest confirmed notes. Consumer microphone low-frequency response limitations can cause the lowest bass and baritone notes (below approximately 100 Hz) to fail confirmation or to be measured with less precision.

Range measurement is only one of four voice type classification criteria. The Fach system classifies voices based on singing range, passaggi, tessitura, and timbre. This tool measures range. It cannot detect passaggi, cannot assess tessitura under sustained repertoire conditions, and cannot evaluate vocal timbre. A range-based classification is a well-informed starting point — not a complete or definitive Fach assessment. The Troubleshooting page documents common reasons why a classification result may differ from professional assessment.

Session results vary with vocal condition. Range varies with warm-up state, hydration, fatigue, time of day, and general health. A test run on a fully warmed-up voice in good condition will typically show a wider range than one run cold or when fatigued. Results from a single session should be treated as a reference point, not a fixed specification.

The tool cannot distinguish register quality. A note confirmed in extreme falsetto and a note confirmed in full head voice at the same pitch are treated identically by the confirmation logic. The tool detects fundamental frequency, not register quality. A complete voice type classification requires a teacher who can assess whether upper range notes represent usable singing quality.

No Professional Advice

Nothing on VocalRangeFinder.com constitutes professional voice coaching, singing instruction, speech-language pathology, laryngology, or any other form of regulated or certified professional service.

In particular:

  • Range measurement results from this tool should not be used as the sole basis for professional decisions — including conservatory audition preparation, repertoire selection for professional performance, or voice health management — without independent professional assessment
  • This tool cannot detect, diagnose, or rule out any voice disorder, vocal fold pathology, or hearing condition — if you have concerns about your vocal health, consult a qualified laryngologist or speech-language pathologist
  • Results do not constitute certified vocal assessment documentation for any professional, academic, or legal purpose
  • Voice type range boundaries published on this site are reference values from vocal science literature — they are not diagnostic thresholds

No Warranties

VocalRangeFinder.com and all content and tools on this site are provided “as is” and “as available” without warranties of any kind, either express or implied.

Nance does not warrant that:

  • The Vocal Range Finder will produce an accurate or complete range measurement for every voice type and hardware configuration

Limitation of Liability

To the fullest extent permitted by applicable law, Nance and VocalRangeFinder.com shall not be liable for any direct, indirect, incidental, consequential, or special damages arising from:

  • Reliance on a vocal range measurement result for any professional, academic, or personal singing decision
  • Vocal training, repertoire, or audition decisions made on the basis of tool results or content from this site
  • Any loss — professional, financial, creative, or otherwise — resulting from actions taken based on information published on this site
  • Failure of the tool to confirm notes or produce a range result on a specific hardware or browser configuration
  • Classification results falling in voice type overlap zones that require professional passaggio assessment to resolve

The maximum liability of Nance to any user of this site, for any reason, shall not exceed the amount paid by that user to access the site. As VocalRangeFinder.com is a free service, this amount is zero.
