What does the Vocal Range Finder measure? The tool measures your singing range by detecting the fundamental frequency of notes you sustain into your microphone, confirming each note when held for the required duration (approximately 300–500 ms), and tracking the lowest and highest confirmed notes across your session. It maps the resulting range against the six standard voice type classifications — soprano, mezzo-soprano, alto, tenor, baritone, and bass — and displays the result in musical note names, Hz, semitones, and octaves. How do I use the tool correctly? Start from your lowest comfortable pitch — not the absolute extreme, but the lowest note you can sustain cleanly — and descend slowly to your lowest sustainable note. Then return to the middle of your range, warm up briefly, and ascend gradually to your highest sustainable note, including head voice or falsetto. Sustain each note clearly for at least two to three seconds before moving to the next. Test in a quiet room with a functional microphone. A warmed-up voice gives a more representative result than a cold one.
Why do I need to give microphone permission? The tool captures your voice through the microphone to detect the fundamental frequency of each note you sing. Without microphone access, pitch analysis is not possible. Your microphone audio is processed entirely within your browser — it is never recorded, stored, or transmitted. Should I include head voice and falsetto in my range session? Yes — unless you are specifically trying to measure your chest voice range only. The tool detects pitch regardless of register. Including head voice and falsetto gives you the widest possible confirmed range and the most complete picture of your voice. Most professional voice type classifications consider the full singing range including upper registers.
Understanding Your Result
The tool classified me as a baritone but my teacher says I am a tenor. Which is correct? Your teacher is almost certainly more reliable. Voice type classification from range measurement alone is inherently limited in the overlapping zones between adjacent types. A range that spans B2–B4 overlaps both baritone and tenor territory — the classification cannot be made from range alone. Your teacher can assess your passaggi (register transition points) and tessitura in ways this tool cannot. Use the tool’s result as a range reference and a conversation starter, not as a final classification.
My range spans only 1.5 octaves. Is that normal? An octave and a half is within the normal range for an untrained adult voice in a single browser session. Several factors affect the measured range: warm-up state, testing thoroughness, microphone quality at the extremes of range, and vocal fatigue. A fully trained singer typically has a range of two to three octaves. If your range seems narrower than expected, try retesting after a thorough vocal warm-up and ensure you have tested all the way to both extremes.
I got a different range result today than last week. Why? Vocal range varies with warm-up state, hydration, fatigue, time of day, and general health. Variation of 2–4 semitones at the extremes between sessions is entirely normal. A measurement session on a fully warmed-up voice in good condition will show a wider range than one run cold or when fatigued. The result from any single session should be treated as a reference point, not a fixed specification.
The tool shows my range as soprano but I have always thought of myself as a mezzo. Why? Range overlaps between soprano and mezzo-soprano are significant. If your highest confirmed notes extend into soprano territory — particularly if you include head voice — the range-based classification may suggest soprano. Whether you are actually a soprano or a mezzo depends critically on where your passaggi occur, not just on whether you can reach soprano-range notes. A single high note in head voice does not make a soprano. Voice type assessment requires professional evaluation.
What does the Hz measurement tell me that the note name does not? The Hz measurement gives you the precise acoustic frequency of each confirmed note, independent of any naming convention. It is useful for cross-referencing against scientific literature on voice type ranges, for documenting your range in a way that is unambiguous across different musical traditions and tuning standards, and for comparing your range to published research data on singing frequency distributions.
Voice Science Questions
What are passaggi and why can the tool not detect them? Passaggi (singular: passaggio) are the register transition points where the voice shifts between chest voice and mixed voice, and between mixed voice and head voice. They are experienced as a change in vocal sensation and quality at a specific pitch range. The location of a singer’s passaggi is one of the most diagnostically important features of voice type — a tenor’s first passaggio typically occurs around D4–E4 (294–330 Hz), while a baritone’s occurs around B3–C4 (247–262 Hz). This two-to-three semitone difference is critical for distinguishing the two voice types when their ranges overlap. The browser-based tool detects pitch but cannot detect the qualitative change in vocal production that marks a passaggio. That assessment requires a trained teacher listening live.
Does my measured range tell me which voice parts I can sing in a choir? It gives a strong indication. Soprano parts typically require the ability to sustain notes to at least G5 (784 Hz) or above comfortably. Alto parts typically require a reliable lower range down to approximately G3 (196 Hz) or below. Tenor parts require consistent notes to C5 (523 Hz) or above. Bass parts require reliable notes to approximately E2 (82 Hz) or F2 (87 Hz). A measured range that clearly covers a part’s requirements is useful evidence for choral placement — but the final judgment rightly rests with the choral director, who can assess tone quality and register consistency live.
Can my vocal range expand with training? Yes. Systematic vocal training — working with a qualified singing teacher — typically expands usable singing range by half an octave to a full octave over several years for most singers. Training develops the ability to produce notes at the extremes of range with consistent quality, proper register transitions, and sustainable technique. The raw outer limits of what the voice can produce in isolation may not change dramatically, but the range that can be used reliably in performance and sustained singing typically increases significantly with training.
Is a wider range always better? Not necessarily. Voice type classification in the Fach system values appropriate range for the category — a dramatic soprano does not need to be able to sing bass notes. In professional vocal performance, the quality, reliability, and resonance of the voice within its appropriate range matters far more than raw range width. Training that extends range at the expense of core quality is counter-productive. Measure your range as information; do not treat it as a competition.
Accuracy and Limitations
How accurate is the range measurement? Under typical conditions — a quiet room, a warmed-up voice, and a functional microphone — the tool achieves note confirmation accuracy of approximately ±1–2 semitones at the extremes of range. Consumer microphone low-frequency roll-off can cause the lowest bass and baritone notes (below approximately 100 Hz) to fail confirmation. A false head note — a note in extreme falsetto that sounds but does not represent usable singing quality — will confirm if held for the required duration.
Can this tool replace an assessment by a singing teacher? No. A professional voice assessment involves passaggio assessment by ear, evaluation of tessitura under sustained singing conditions, and qualitative judgment about timbre, weight, and register quality. None of these are captured by range measurement. This tool is a documented, scientifically grounded supplementary reference — not a substitute for professional assessment.
